The 54-year-old will return from his family holiday on Monday and talks are expected to conclude quickly. There are only a couple of minor issues to be resolved before the former England head coach takes over. McClaren is expected to agree a four-year contract at St James’ Park as permenent successor to Alan Pardew, who left the club in Decmebr to take over at Crystal Palace.
John Carver, who held the fort to the end of the season, wanted the job, but McClaren was the top target for Lee Charnley, the managing director, since a failed first attempt in January, when McClaren was in charge at Derby.
Before his sacking, following a failure to get Derby promoted, he would have cost Newcastle £2m compensation. The club also spoke to Rémi Garde and Patrick Vieira about the job.
Newcastle are keen to emphasise the quality of McClaren’s CV. He led Middlesbrough to their first major trophy, the League Cup, when he was in charge, and took the club into European football, where they reached the Uefa Cup final. McClaren also led the unfancied FC Twente to the Dutch title.
McClaren will be involved in recruitment as his new club attempts to move forward from a disappointing campaign, in which they only secured their Premier League status on the final day of the season.
It is expected they will sign as many as seven players this summer and have a clearout, with Papiss Cissé, Cheick Tioté and Fabricio Coloccini all possible departures.
