The former Swansea City man joined for a fee believed to be in the region of £12m this week and makes an immediate entrance at St James’ Park.
Other January signing Henri Saivet is on the bench for the hosts – who are in the bottom three.
West Ham boss Slavan Bilic, on the other hand, has both Enner Valencia and Dimitri Payet to call upon for the long trip to the North East.
