Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With the World Cup over, attention turns to the upcoming Premier League season. Newcastle endured a yo-yo season last term that left fans furious with the management of Alan Pardew on the pitch and Mike Ashley off of it.
After a poor start the Magpies then went on a run of seven wins and a draw in nine matches in November and December, reaching 40 points before seemingly giving up for the season – winning just five of their final 20 matches and scoring only 14 goals.
Alan Pardew faced boycotts, boos and banners on a weekly basis and knew he had his work cut out if he was to win the fans over again, he’s moved quickly to make a number of impressive-looking signings.
Here, we take a look at those who have arrived at the club, who might still be on their way and a look at their pre-season plans.
New signings
Remy Cabella (Montpellier, £12m)
His record in Ligue 1 is hugely impressive – he scored 14 goals from the wing last season. He models himself and wants to have the kind of impact that former French wingers David Ginola and Laurent Robery had on Tyneside. If he can reach those heights, the Toon will have found themselves another French bargain.
Siem de Jong (Ajax, £6m)
The former Ajax captain can play in a variety of positions; behind the striker, on the wing or up front. His goal record is good without being outstanding, but it’s his clever link up play and team play is what will have fans excited – he’s already been named Pardew’s vice-captain.
Ayoze Perez (Tenerife £1.5m)
Certainly one for the future, the 20-year-old will probably not get too many games at St James’ Park next season.
Jack Colback (Sunderland, free)
A real coup from the club, Newcastle stole one of their biggest rivals’ best players in Colback. Industrious and talented, he will not quite fill the void left by Yohan Cabaye but will certainly add steel to a weak midfield.
Daryl Janmaat (Feyernoord, undisclosed)
With Mathieu Debuchy desperate for a move to Arsenal, Janmaat will be a capable replacement for the excellent Frenchman. The Dutch right back started for the Netherlands in the first three of their World Cup games before being dropped, but showed he was a good defender and willing runner up and down the touchline.
Possible new arrivals?
Pre-season plans
Alan Pardew’s squad are flying all the way to New Zealand for matches against Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix, before playing Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. They then travel out to Germany for matches with Malaga and Schalke before playing Huddersfielkd away and Real Sociedad at St James’ Park.
