Nathaniel Clyne has revealed his torment at being left on the sidelines by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The England defender, who made his debut on loan at Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round defeat by South Coast rivals Brighton, said: “I am happy to perform and play 90 minutes. I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

“I have gone a whole season-and-a-half without really playing consistent football, which is unusual to me because I am used to playing a lot.

“This opportunity has arisen and hopefully I can play as many games as I can and stay injury-free.

“It is very frustrating. Knowing you are fit and you can go out there and play, but constantly not getting selected for the team is a bit disappointing.

“I would rather just go out and find another club which would give me the opportunities to play games. This is why I am here.

“I am just looking to play and go step by step.”

Neil Warnock, who gave the full-back his senior debut, made clear his own disappointment at Liverpool and Clyne after claiming he had been promised the England international - only to turn on his television and see Clyne signing for Bournemouth.

But Clyne, who is simply happy to be playing again, said he had little say in the move.

The former Southampton star said: “I got the call and my agent said, ‘Get packed, you’re ready to go’. It was a nice five-hour drive down here! I got to meet the manager and he showed me round the training ground and the stadium.

“The first thing he said was, ‘Are you ready to play?’ I said of course, I wasn’t going to turn the opportunity down.

“I have looked a lot at how Bournemouth play and it is similar to my style. They have a great manager and that’s what urged me to come here.

“Saturday was the first time I met my team-mates. I met them in the changing room and they were welcoming. I knew a lot of them beforehand.

“I am looking to nail down the spot at right-back and to hopefully play as many games as I can.”

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was impressed with new-boy Clyne, especially after such scant preparation time with his new colleagues.

Howe said: “I’ve hardly seen him, to be honest. He literally reported for the game and played.

“You wouldn’t have known it was his first game today. We had no doubts over him. His experience will be vital
