Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Mourinho was in trouble with Uefa and the Football Association for his conduct after matches against Barcelona and Manchester United last season, and a fortnight ago accused the Premier League of bias by giving his side five away fixtures after their six Champions' League group ties next season while Arsenal were presented with more home games.

Scudamore dismissed Mourinho's argument, saying that the weekly home and away rotation of domestic fixtures had worked against Chelsea, but he also said he was not worried by Portuguese coach's outbursts. "We like it that Jose Mourinho is so animated," he said. "We are a pretty tolerant organisation. In terms of overstepping the mark, there is a high bar there. It is debate, a bit of controversy and most of this whole issue is good for us."

A trip to Pride Park proved to be good for Emile Heskey, who scored twice as Birmingham beat Derby 4-0 in their friendly match yesterday. In the Blues' first game back after a tour to Norway, the Finnish pair Mikael Forssell and Shefki Kuqi added the other goals.

Birmingham's city rivals, Aston Villa, were brought down to earth after Thursday's 14-0 thrashing of the Swedish part-timers Gallstad when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Jonkoping Sodra.

Nolberto Solano gave Villa the lead in the 70th minute when he moved on to Juan Pablo Angel's lay-off to score from 18 yards, but their advantage was short-lived, Joacim Dahlstrom steering the equaliser past Stuart Taylor.

The Italian club Internazionale have called off their proposed tour to England after the recent bombs in London, but Malaga stuck to their plans to visit and played out a 0-0 draw at Burnley.
