From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly has signed a new one-year contract - but Mido is returning to Roma after 18 months on loan.

Kelly, who had been linked with a move to Birmingham, would have been out of contract this summer, but the Republic of Ireland international has agreed to stay. The 22-year-old is unlikely to have Mido as a team-mate next season, however, after Tottenham said talks to sign the Egyptian striker permanently from Roma had broken down. Mido made 27 starts and scored 14 goals for Tottenham. He missed the last four games of last season and Tottenham agreed a deal to sign £11m Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov from Bayer Leverkusen as a replacement.

Tottenham have also decided to release the Serbia and Montenegro centre-back Goran Bunjevcevic, while veteran Morocco defender Noureddine Naybet also departs.
