Mesut Özil just loves to show off his skills by playing with chewing gum, as the Arsenal midfielder’s latest Adidas advert for his new laceless boots reveals.

Özil was caught by TV cameras on October 2013 during his warm-up having a kick-around with his chewing gum, with the £42.5m club record signing spitting it out of his mouth, volleying it with his right foot and catching it again before grinning as his team-mates looked on.

While his skills with the ball are a major factor behind Arsenal’s standing at the top of the Premier League this season, it’s his chewing gum trickery that remains one of his highlights of his time at the Emirates so far.

The World Cup winner leads the Premier League assist chart by some distance this season too, leading to fans raving over his every move, and his boot supplier Adidas have orchestrated a new advert to recognise his previous antics as well as show off his new range that come without shoelaces.

But why would the 27-year-old want to play with boots without laces? Well, he explained that it’s long been his “dream” to play without laces due to the impact they have on his contact when striking the ball.

"My whole career I have tried to minimise the impact of laces on my strike and ball control," Özil, who has made a phenomenal 16 assists in the Premier League this season, said.

"I revealed to Adidas in 2014 that in the changing room I knot the laces over and over again and then tuck in the ends, that way they do not interfere with my touch. When they came to me last year with the laceless boots, it was like they have created my dream product. I cannot wait to wear them on the pitch."

What to expect from Arsenal this transfer window

However, that brings us to the advert. Özil jumps up off his chair, starts doing keepy-uppys with his chewing gum, and all seems well with the Arsenal star. But suddenly the midfielder turns magician, and he volleys the gum straight at the camera.

Here comes the controversial bit. The gum sticks to the lens, before Özil picks it off and puts it back in his mouth. Is it genuine? You decide.
