Marouane Fellaini has ridiculed Jamie Carragher by saying he has no right to criticise him because he is ‘the guy who spat on a girl from his car’.

Carragher and Fellaini have shared a mutual disdain since the former Liverpool defender described him as a “menace in the worst possible sense” in a column written for the Daily Mail two years ago, adding that he hopes “we never see them [his elbows] in the Premier League again” following an incident with Stoke City’s Robert Huth.

Fellaini originally responded by slamming Carragher as the “champion of blah blah blah and the world champion of breaking legs” in an interview with Sport/Voetbal magazine, but the big-haired Belgian midfielder has now revisited his Carragher criticism, citing the pundit’s suspension from Sky Sports as damning of his pundit credentials.

“How can someone like Carragher lecture me?” Fellaini told Sport/Voetbal magazine.

“The guy who spat on a girl from his car after Manchester United – Liverpool.

“You know, the critics help you progress, you end up working more, you want to show them they are wrong.”

Fellaini has fashioned himself as a key member of Jose Mourinho’s arsenal, following a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

The Belgian international was widely criticised following his £27million transfer from Everton five years ago, becoming one of the club’s main scapegoats for their Moyesian failure.

At the beginning of Mourinho’s tenure last season, the Belgian became a frequently used second-half substitute, but he remained the subject of much discontent pouring from the stands.

However, Fellaini now believes he has proven himself to United supporters courtesy of his vital role in the club’s recent successes.

“Last season, I played 50 matches of which more than 30 were starts. I endured the negative criticism at the start but I never gave anything way, and in the end, I have been rewarded for my dedication during the season by winning three trophies.”

Fellaini added: “It [booing] happened once, and it was exaggerated. It was against Tottenham when I was coming on to the pitch as a substitute, a week after giving away a penalty at Everton.

“In the end, I know this and supporters know it too: I have had an important role in every trophy that the club has won in recent years.”
