From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United

Dean Henderson – 7: Pulled off a fantastic save to tip over a long-range Mahrez effort in the second half when the shot looked destined for the top corner. Could do little about either City goal.

Luke Shaw – 6: Almost clumsily gave away a penalty by blocking off Sterling, but was fine elsewhere.

Victor Lindelof – 6: Was generally solid, though the centre-back began to struggle under City pressure after Stones’ opener.

Harry Maguire – 6: Dealt well with Mahrez for the most part, but let Stones go for the City man’s finish.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5: Struggled to contain a spirited Foden on United’s right flank. Poor headed clearance set up Fernandinho’s goal.

Fred – 5: Beyond being booked, the Brazilian didn’t make many significant contributions to the game.

Scott McTominay – 5: An unusually quiet showing from the central midfielder, who was replaced by Greenwood.

Paul Pogba – 6: Tried to do a bit of everything; did most of it pretty well.

Bruno Fernandes – 6: Tested Steffen well from range in the first half but wasn’t at his best creatively.

Anthony Martial – 6: Linked up well with Rashford, but was somewhat in his fellow forward’s shadow – as has been the case a fair few times this season.

Marcus Rashford – 7: Was a livewire and dangerous throughout.

Substitutes: Greenwood – 6; Van de Beek – N/A.

Manchester City

Zack Steffen – 7: Saved well from Fernandes and (an offside) Rashford in the opening 10 minutes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 6: Was better with the ball than without it.

John Stones – 8: Was spared an unfortunate own goal by the offside flag, but found the right net after the break. Largely composed.

Ruben Dias – 8: Sprinted across to make a tremendous block to deny Rashford in the first half. Impressed throughout.

Joao Cancelo – 8: Provided a fantastic set-piece delivery for Stones to open the scoring, and his crosses elsewhere were crisp and dangerous.

Fernandinho – 7: A strong presence in the middle of the pitch for the visitors. Struck a fine, low volley to double City’s lead.

Ilkay Gundogan – 7: Netted early on but was just offside. Was not as influential as in City’s victory over Chelsea last time out, but grew into the game.

Phil Foden – 7: Crossed neatly for Gundogan’s offside goal, then saw his own tidy finish ruled offside. Fine margins prevented this from being a maestro’s performance.

Raheem Sterling – 6: An incomplete performance from the winger, but not for a lack of trying.

Riyad Mahrez – 6: No lack of effort on the winger’s part, though he did lack some incision. Forced a tremendous save out of Henderson.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7: Slammed a shot against the post from outside the United box in the first half. Was constantly looking to create.

Substitutes: Rodri – 6.
