Manchester United survived a scare against West Ham as a pair of Paul Pogba penalties secured a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Looking laboured after hosting Barcelona here last week, a weakened United side took the lead via a controversial penalty with Juan Mata was brought down after 19 minutes.

But Manuel Pellegrini’s side returned positively after half-time and equalised through Felipe Anderson who was a constant menace on the right-hand side.

And while the Hammers came close to taking the lead themselves, it was Anthony Martial though raced through on the counter-attack and was carelessly brought down, gifting Pogba the opportunity to win the game.

It means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have closed the gap to just two points in their race for a top-four finish ahead of their trip to Barcelona on Tuesday.
