Manchester United failed to win for the first time this season as they were held to 0-0 draw by Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

United thought they had an early breakthrough when Adnan Januzaj sent captain Wayne Rooney through on goal to score, but his effort was controversially chalked off as the offside flag was up.

United continued to press on though and had further chances through Rooney and Memphis Depay, but Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul and defensive duo Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor remained defiant to keep the scores level.

After the break, United manager Louis van Gaal replaced Bastian Schweinsteiger - who was making his first start - with Michael Carrick, giving United more purpose in attack and it nearly paid off in the closing minutes, though Chris Smalling could only watch on as his effort hit the post and bounced clear.

Newcastle nearly stole the three points immediately after with a breakaway chance, but new signing Florian Thauvin could not get his foot onto the end of a Georginio Wijnaldum cross with the goal at his mercy.
