Kasper Schmeichel could “bring the standard up” at Manchester United if the Red Devils were to sign the Leicester goalkeeper, according to Mark Bosnich, who has experience between the posts for the 20-time English champions.
Bosnich represented United between 1989 and 1991 before returning to Old Trafford in 1999 for another two-year stint.
The Australian’s spells in Manchester came either side of Peter Schmeichel’s eight years at United, and Bosnich believes the goalkeeping legend’s son would be an ideal fit in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with David de Gea having struggled for form recently.
“When he’s playing well, he’s as good as any goalkeeper in the Premier League,” Bosnich said of the Foxes’ goalkeeper while speaking to Sky Sports.
“He’s won a title with Leicester, he’s been very consistent at international level [with Denmark] for quite some time as well. Obviously, when Leicester were in the Champions League he performed very well.
“We don’t know exactly with the David de Gea situation, we saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back him and keep him in the side. There’s Dean Henderson [on loan at Sheffield United] as well, but I think that would be a fantastic move for both parties.
“Even if they decide to keep David de Gea, to have someone of the quality of Kasper Schmeichel fighting for a place with De Gea would bring the whole standard up a couple of notches.
“Like I said, when he plays at his best – which is more regular than not – Kasper Schmeichel is as good as anyone in the Premier League.”
Schmeichel, for his part, has spoken out against the recent criticism of De Gea, saying the Spaniard is still “world class”.
