David Beckham has already signalled his intent to start up a franchise in the MLS after pushing forward with plans to run a team out of Miami, but reports in Thursday’s The Sun claim that he is discussing the possibility of launching a surprise move to take over control of United from the Glazer family with his former team-mates.
Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, are believed to be involved in the talks, and while the claims state talks are far from advanced, the news will be music to United supporters’ ears as they endure a season to forget.
It is reported that the septet will front a bid that would come with significant financial backing from the Middle East, and while the Glazer family have insisted they remain committed to owning the club for the long-term, fans have remained persistent in calling for their exit due to the debt suffered under their tenure.
Scholes made his TV punditry debut in during the 3-0 Manchester derby defeat on Tuesday night, when Manchester City asserted their dominance over their fierce rivals this season that saw David Moyes come crashing back to earth. Some pressure on the Scot’s shoulders had been lifted via the wins over Olympiakos and West Ham, but the comprehensive loss at Old Trafford saw the strongest calls yet for his sacking.
There has been calls for Giggs, who is the only member of the six still in his playing days, to take temporary charge until the end of the season, with the Welshman already a part of the coaching staff at Old Trafford alongside Phil Neville and Butt.
Scholes has also helped out this season with the under-19 side, but the former England international claimed on Tuesday that the club were suffering an identity crisis since Sir Alex Ferguson retired – despite the £37.1m addition of Juan Mata and the £27.5m acquisition of Maroune Fellaini.
Gary Neville has been working as a pundit for Sky Sports since 2011 while also holding a place on Roy Hodgson’s England coaching staff.
