Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Louis van Gaal has ordered Manchester United players to take an extra training session on just their second day of pre-season as the new boss prepares to get tough.
Though the Dutchman is still in Brazil with the Netherlands, Van Gaal's players will be made to train for an extra session Tuesday afternoon.
Van Gaal has a dictatorial reputation who is not afraid to upset players to get results.
Double training sessions are not uncommon, but evening sessions are - the extra session is scheduled for 5.30pm with players given the choice of returning home or sleeping at the Carrington training ground.
Manchester United will undergo a pre-season tour of the USA next week and the 62-year-old is expected to join them as soon as his Netherlands squad end their involvement in the tournament.
Van Gaal also wants the players who played for England in Brazil to be on the plane. In the past those playing at major tournaments have been given a month to rest but Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones will be expected to report for duty 24 days after the 0-0 draw with Costa Rica.
Ryan Giggs will be in charge of United until Van Gaal arrives but his new assistant coach, Albert Stuivenberg, was at Carrington on Monday to oversee medical and fitness tests.
