Manchester United have omitted Phil Jones and Sergio Romero from their 25-man squad for the 2020-21 Premier League season, casting their long-term future at Old Trafford into further doubt.

Jones and Romero were also left out of United’s Champions League squad earlier this month after falling out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But Marcos Rojo, who was also omitted from the Champions League list, will be available for selection domestically after being included in the Premier League list.

Jones made just eight appearances for United last season, enduring yet another campaign blighted by injury and fitness concerns. The 28-year-old signed a a four-year contract at Old Trafford only last year.

Romero, meanwhile, has not returned to training at United’s Carrington base this season after falling down the pecking order.

The Argentina international was Solskjaer’s second-choice goalkeeper until the return of Dean Henderson from a loan spell at Sheffield United.

Romero hoped to secure a move away from United during the transfer window, with Everton and Aston Villa interested in his services, but ultimately stayed put.

United’s treatment of Romero was publicly criticised by his wife Eliana Guercio, who accused the Old Trafford club of lacking respect.
