Your support makes all the difference.Manchester United have released their new home kit for the 2019/20 Premier League season that features a number of changes inspired by the 1999 treble success, with Paul Pogba included in the unveiling in what is the biggest hint yet that he will be staying at Old Trafford this summer.
Available to buy from today, the home kit draws inspiration from Sir Alex Ferguson’s side that clinched an unprecedented Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble 20 years ago, which can be seen all over the new jersey.
A new crest has been unveiled with the black and gold style resembling that worn by the ’99 side, but that is just one of many mentions of the treble.
On each sleeve, the numbers ’91’ and ‘93’ will be displayed in reference to the goals scored by Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dying minutes of the 1999 Champions League final, which saw United defeat Bayern Munich in Barcelona 3-2 to lift the European Cup.
Furthermore, the dates of each trophy success that season will be stitched into the kit towards the wait line, displaying the score, opponent and location of the victory.
And finally, a new goalkeeper’s kit has been released in a two-tone purple that mirrors the strip worn by Peter Schmeichel 20 years ago.
The kit, which will be worn by both Manchester United’s men’s and women’s sides, will be displayed for the first time fittingly when a United Legends side faces Bayern Munich Legends on 26 May, exactly 20 years after their Champions League final encounter. It will then be worn by the first team on their pre-season tour, starting in Perth, Australia, on 17th July against Leeds United.
The most notable face in the kit unveiling is undoubtedly that of World Cup-winner Pogba, who has been strongly linked with a transfer to Real Madrid this summer. The midfielder is wanted by French manager Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu, so much so that he is willing to offer United his preferred goalkeeper Keylor Navas in a player-plus-cash swap deal.
Pogba is also understood to want out of Old Trafford, but there are plenty of complications over any move away as a deal would cost in excess of £150m, while Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has been banned by Fifa from all football-related activity for three months – a ban which ends on 9 August that is likely to come one day after the closure of the Premier League transfer window that would prevent United from spending any money generated by selling the 26-year-old.
Fans will be delighted to see Pogba wearing next season’s shirt as it is the biggest hint yet that he features firmly in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for next season, but it is no guarantee that he will still be at Old Trafford next term.
Joining Pogba in the unveiling is defender Luke Shaw and midfielders Scott McTominay and Jesse Lingard, as well as Manchester United Women’s captain and England star Alex Greenwood.
