According to the Daily Telegraph, United will have just Wayne Rooney as a recognised striker for this season despite attempts to sign reinforcements this summer.
Hernandez missed a penalty during the 4-0 Champions League qualifier win over Club Brugge on Wednesday and now his time in Manchester appears to be up.
Van Gaal will need to heavily rely on Memphis Depay, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson once the 27-year-old's move to the Bundesliga is complete.
The Dutchman has now quarrels with putting such huge expectation on Rooney's shoulders after revealing that he consults the England captain on team selection.
"Things like the selection and the kitchen and the members of the staff, everything you can mention, he is involved," Van Gaal told The Sun on Sunday.
"I think he trusts me so that is also very important and I trust him. So when he comes to me and has remarks I always pay attention."
