Manchester United are hoping to offload Bastian Schweinsteiger in January and are willing to pay the midfielder £10m just to leave the club.

Schweinsteiger is yet to play for the club this season and has been told that he is not part of Jose Mourinho’s plans for the future.

And, despite the fact that United will be faced with a huge payoff to let him go, the club are prepared to terminate his £180,000-a-week contract so the German World Cup winner can leave in the next transfer window.

Schweinsteiger has two years left on his current United deal and is approximately due to earn £18m during that time.

The combative midfielder made a shock return to first team training last week after being cast into the wilderness by Mourinho, but it is rumoured that this is simply a ploy by the United boss to get him fit for a potential move away from the club.

“Bastian is fulfilling his obligations by training each day and is in terrific shape,” A source inside the club revealed.

“He’s looking as good as he has since he arrived at the club.

“United are hoping a club will still come forward to take him off their hands in the upcoming window, but there are no takers as of yet.”

United, though, are happy to write off his £6m transfer fee and the £4m that Schweinsteiger is set to earn between January and the end of the season to get him off of their books.

The only stumbling block in this move is finding a club willing a pay Schweinsteiger’s astronomical wages. It is believed that a move to China or Major League Soccer will be his most likely destination should a transfer take place.

Recently, though, there have been calls for Schweinsteiger to be reintroduced to the United fold as the club continue to struggle under the new regime.

Their 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Europa League last night was just the latest in a series of disappointing recent results as pressure begins to mount on Mourinho’s side.
