From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Norwich heaped the pressure on Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Cameron Jerome and Alexander Tettey, with Anthony Martial scoring what proved to be a consolation for United who have now not won in their last six matches.

United went into the game off the back of a poor run that has seen fans show signs of discontent with Van Gaal’s conservative style, and given the sacking of Jose Mourinho by Chelsea just six months after winning the title, alarm bells were beginning to ring for the Dutchman.

United thought they had an early lead when Rooney slotted in from close range, but the assistant referee’s flag was up after Marouane Fellaini had clearly strayed offside before passing inside to Rooney.

Things were made worse soon after when Norwich broke from deep. Nathan Redmond ran down the right before feeding striker Jerome, and he lifted the ball over the head of David De Gea in the United goal to give Norwich the lead.

United were booed off at half-time, and the fans were left stunned when Tettey poked home a second beyond a rooted De Gea to double the lead.

United tried to push forward and Van Gaal introduced Ander Herrera for the ineffectual Fellaini, and they gave the those in the Theatre of Dreams some hope when a dangerous Ashley Young cross was thundered into the roof of the net by Martial.

However, United couldn’t find an equalising second goal, and after Chris Smalling missed two late chances to level the game, the final whistle went to the fury of the home fans.
