Defeat for Liverpool to Newcastle on Saturday coupled with a Manchester City victory at home to Leicester would seal the title with a game to spare for Pep Guardiola’s side.
If Liverpool can only manage a draw against Rafa Benitez’s side, and City defeat Leicester, then the Reds would require a goal difference swing of four as well as City to drop points against Brighton on the final day to win their first top flight crown for 29 years.
With just two games to go and trailing by one point, Liverpool require their title rivals to falter in one of their remaining games against Leicester or Brighton, while Jurgen Klopp’s side themselves must negotiate tricky games against Newcastle and Wolves.
Brendan Rodgers, the man who nearly, so nearly wrote his name into Liverpool folklore by winning the Premier League title has a massive role to play in this year’s title race.
The Leicester boss could yet decide the destination of the trophy, albeit in not quite the way he would have hoped in 2014.
Rodgers’ Leicester side, fresh off the back of thumping Arsenal 3-0, are in brilliant form, too, with Youri Tielemans and Jamie Vardy excelling – so could Liverpool get a massive favour from their old boss?
Liverpool must also bounce back following their Champions League semi-final first leg defeat to Barcelona in midweek and ensure their attentions are fully focused on the title race, in the knowledge that any slip up at this late stage would be decisive in either direction.
The two sides have battled in one of the tightest title races in living memory, with City having held the lead for 18 gameweeks while Liverpool have led the way for 17 gameweeks.
