Mackay has been out of work since being sacked by Cardiff in December but has been linked with a number of posts, including his former club Norwich.
The 42-year-old is keeping his options open - but hopes to be back involved again soon.
He told Sky Sports News at the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year dinner: "I've got to have a look and see what's out there at the moment.
"It's waiting and seeing the lie of the land - but I'm looking to get back in as quickly as possible."
Mackay dropped his legal claim against Cardiff last week after reaching a settlement on his sacking.
