Reports suggest that the Dutchman is eager to get to work at Old Trafford as soon as possible meaning he could be in place by the middle of next week should the Netherlands fail to progress past Mexico this afternoon.
Van Gaal must first return to Amsterdam after leaving Brazil for a reception with the Dutch FA but will then head immediately to Manchester.
According to reports the 62-year-old has told Manchester United that he does not need a break after the World Cup where his side have so far won all three of their matches.
The Dutchman is understood to have been in regular contact with the club as they look to bolster their squad. In the last week they have signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw while more arrivals are expected during the transfer window.
