Manchester United plan to post extra security around the manager's dugout for the next home game, against Chelsea on 28 December, according to reports.

Two extra stewards were posted next to Louis van Gaal (above) during the defeat to Norwich City at the weekend and are likely to again be by the Dutchman's side for the match against the Blues.

Van Gaal was verbally abused during the 2-1 defeat as he sat in his seat and also as he walked to and from the dressing room.

According to The Sun there is said to be concern for Van Gaal's safety, with the club now on an awful run of form that has seen them win just three of the last 13 and crash out of the Champions League.

As The Independent revealed on Monday evening, the United hierarchy want to give as much time to Van Gaal as is possible.

They don't want to be seen as a sacking club, while they have also been impressed with the off-field work the Dutchman has undergone during his tenure.

Some of the United players are said to be disillusioned under Van Gaal, a famously meticulous micro-manager.

He had enjoyed a great relationship with the United fans but that has been etched away in recent weeks because of the awful results and boring style of play.

Jose Mourinho, of course, is also available although there are still some reservations over the sacked Chelsea coach, despite his unrivalled record.
