Daley Blind has claimed that Louis van Gaal was not ‘treated properly’ during his time as Manchester United manager.

The Holland international, who found himself deputising at centre-back for the majority of the past season, was one of Van Gaal’s first signings upon his arrival at Old Trafford in 2014.

Van Gaal was relieved of his duties on Sunday, following a meeting with the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, one day after enjoying FA Cup glory at Wembley.

His dismissal was confirmed by the club on Monday night and Blind, who had previously worked under Van Gaal in Holland’s national set-up, reacted by defending his fellow countryman.

"I've always enjoyed working with Van Gaal and I would have liked to work with him longer,” he told De Telegraaf, in quotes picked up by the Manchester Evening News.

"A manager in England will always have pressure. But in the past six months he hasn't always been treated properly.”

Van Gaal was forced to contend with speculation surrounding his future all season long and particularly from Christmas onwards, following Mourinho’s own dismissal from Chelsea.

Despite lamenting the sacking of Van Gaal, Blind is determined to prove his worth to the Dutchman’s replacement.

"If Mourinho does come to United, I'll have to prove myself from the beginning, like any other player."
