Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he has shared a laugh with one of the club's security guards about his side being top of the Premier League.

The side returned to the top of English football for the first time in 110 weeks after they capitalised on Manchester City's defeat at Tottenham Hotspur by beating Sunderland 3-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay both scored their first Premier League goals of the seasona and Juan Mata added a third against the bottom of the table Black Cats - the victory saw United go a point above their local rivals.

Asked if he was proud of returning the club back to the top of the Premier League, the Dutchman replied: "Of course, of course.

"I said to the security guy: 'You are now a security guy of a club that top of the league' and that makes a huge difference.

"Also for him. He is proud and I am proud. Last week it was the first time I was second.

"He was smiling."

However, the Manchester United manager refused to get carried away with his new position.

"I know exactly where I stand," added Van Gaal. "I have said it before and six weeks ago and the same answers. We have a good team, but we can win and lose.

"Last season you asked: 'Can you manage in England?' I said I needed time and it’s the same."
