Liverpool owner John W Henry shot down the latest club takeover rumours in typical fashion as he took to Twitter to deny the claims, echoing memories of his famous post about Arsenal’s transfer offer for Luis Suarez in 2013.

Henry, who fronts Fenway Sports Group, the owners of the Merseyside club, has insisted that the club are not for sale despite reports of an imminent takeover approach from China, with club chairman Tom Werner also ruling out a change of ownership by saying the club was “not for sale”.

However, Talksport reporter Ian Abrahams posted a message on Twitter on Tuesday night the claim that the takeover of Liverpool Football Club would be completed before Christmas, and could even be signed off as early as next week, much to the surprise of club’s fans.

It appears that Abrahams’ revelation also caught Henry by surprise, and he took to Twitter to respond directly to the reporter, 21 hours after he originally posted the news.

Henry wrote: “@BroadcastMoose @LFC Good that your sources will be debunked so soon. Usually it takes a long time!”

The reply left Liverpool fans in stitches on social media, with many sending Abrahams memes and jokes after having his story dismissed in such public fashion.

Henry has previous when it comes to answering newspaper reports on social media though, having sent a comical message about Arsenal when they lodged a £40m plus £1 bid to try and sign Suarez three years ago in the belief that they had activated a release clause in his contract.

After rejecting the offer even though Suarez confirmed the clause existed, Henry wrote on Twitter: What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?"

The tweet quickly went viral, gaining over 57,000 retweets and 24,000 likes, and it has gone down in history as one of the most memorable phrases in English football when it comes to unbelievable reports.
