A social media post by Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain, has sparked rumours that his time at Los Angeles Galaxy is coming to an end.

The 36-year-old midfielder ended his 17-year-long spell with Liverpool to join the Major League Soccer club on an 18-month contract in the summer of 2015.

Ahead of the Galaxy’s final league fixture of the season against FC Dallas on Sunday, Gerrard has posted an apparent farewell message to his Instagram account.

Alongside a graphic of himself in a Galaxy shirt, Gerrard wrote: “Living in Los Angeles and playing for the great Galaxy supporters has been a privilege.

“You have made this place feel like home to me. This city and this club will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you #8”.

The significance of Gerrard's post has been called into question, however, after several other Galaxy players posted similar messages to their social media accounts.

A.J. DeLaGarza, Clement Diop, Robbie Rogers and Sebastian Lletget also posted tributes to the MLS club on Instagram.

Despite suggestions that Gerrard would end his playing career following his stint in MLS, the post has sparked speculation that he could yet play for Liverpool again among the club’s supporters on social media.

Gerrard returned to Merseyside to train with his former club during MLS’ off-season last November and was again spotted at Melwood, Liverpool’s training ground, earlier this month.

The former England captain has made no secret of his desire to work at Anfield again in some capacity.

In May, Gerrard admitted he would return to his boyhood club "sooner rather than later" during a Q&A session with a group of the Galaxy's supporters.

"I will be going home at some point," he said. "I don't want to start any unnecessary rumours. I'm really happy where I am at the moment. But I'm sure somewhere down the line I will represent Liverpool Football Club.”
