Liverpool must win the Premier League title for Steven Gerrard, admits striker Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge believes Liverpool need to win the Premier League title for captain Steven Gerrard, with the long-serving midfielder yet to land his maiden league championship.

The Reds’ 4-0 victory over Tottenham last weekend has moved Liverpool top of the table, and with fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea at Anfield to be played in the next few weeks, the club know that six wins from their remaining fixtures will see them claim a first league title since 1990.

Despite a hugely successful and distinguished career, Gerrard has never won the English top flight crown, and Sturridge admits that helping the Liverpool and England captain land his first Premier League triumph is a big motivational factor in the run-in to the end of the season.

“If we win it, Stevie really deserves it, he should win the Premier League because of everything he has done for this club,” said the striker. “Every player in this team will do their best to help him achieve that goal.

“He's just unbelievable every day, a great leader. He lives and dies for this club, he's been here his whole career and it's just a great pleasure to be able to play with him. He is the perfect example for every young player around the country – in fact a real example for every player.

“He's been so loyal to Liverpool – he has been world class and still is world class. Stevie will always be a legend not just for Liverpool, but to England as well. He will definitely go down in history as one of the best midfielders in the game, never mind just this club.”

The 24-year-old has formed a fearsome strike-partnership with Luis Suarez this season, with the pair netting 49 goals in this season league campaign. Sturridge’s tally of 20 represents his highest return since his emergence with Manchester City and a spell with Chelsea, and he looks set to lead England’s attack at the World Cup in Brazil in the summer.

But for now, Sturridge is urging the Merseyside club not to get ahead of themselves, and admits that there’ll be a lot of work to do in each match. He stresses that the players are still taking the campaign game-by-game, and admits that each one is as important as the next despite the fixtures with their title rivals looming on the horizon.

“You saw it against Sunderland that teams will come and be really compact, and try to close down all the spaces against us,” continued Sturridge. “That makes it difficult. But from now it is all about the results, that's all that matters, so we won't worry about anything else.

“The important thing is just to keep working hard as a team and if we do that, I am sure we will continue to get the results. There are still six games to go, every one of them huge, so we will not get too excited just yet.”

The Reds will look to extend their eight-match winning streak when they travel to West Ham on Sunday for the day’s late kick-off, before the mouth-watering encounter against Manchester City next weekend.
