Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool supporters unveiled a banner featuring the image of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn during their side’s Premier League meeting with Southampton on Sunday.
The banner, organised by members of the Blacklist Support Group, was displayed at the front of Anfield’s famous Kop stand before kick-off and carried the message: “What unites us is greater than what divides us.”
John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor, was also featured on the banner, as were several other social justice causes including the Hillsborough Justice, the Shrewsbury 24 and the Orgreave Truth and Justice campaigns.
The show of support for Corbyn’s Labour comes two days after Steve Rotherham was elected Liverpool’s first ‘metro mayor’ representing the party in local elections.
Roy Bentham, from Blacklist, told the Liverpool Echo that the display was designed as a show of support for Labour in the run-up to June’s general election.
“The banner is acknowledgement for Jeremy and John’s tireless efforts in campaigning for social justice wherever that may be,” he said.
“We are as ever proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them as they have with us on our long paths to justice.
“As working class people in this historically working class city, never has that quote on the flag been more apt than at this time. What unites us is greater than what divides us.”
