Manchester City have confirmed that Leroy Sane will undergo surgery this week on a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, ruling him out for the majority of the upcoming season.

The 23-year-old was a transfer target for Bayern Munich this summer and his future was very much up in the air, having failed to lock down a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI.

But despite a very public pursuit of the Germany international, Bayern failed to make headway in their attempts to sign Sane and he started last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Liverpool at Wembley – only to suffer the serious knee injury in the first half.

City issued an update on Thursday evening to confirm the worst, with Sane scheduled to go under the knife this week and miss the best part of the season – with ACL injuries taking as long as nine months to fully heal.

“Manchester City FC can confirm that Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee,” a club statement read. “The flying winger picked up an injury in the opening stages of City’s Community Shield triumph over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

“He has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury.

“Leroy will have surgery in the coming week. Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the Club wishes him a quick and full recovery.”
