Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has announced that Leroy Sane could be ruled out for up to seven months.

The Germany international suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in the early stages of the Community Shield win over Liverpool at Wembley last Sunday and is due to have surgery next week.

“I don’t know (how long he will be out), I am not a physio,” Guardiola said.

“But with this kind of injury it is normally six or seven months. He is in the best hands in terms of the surgery next week.”

The 23-year-old was a transfer target for Bayern Munich this summer and his future was very much up in the air, having failed to lock down a regular place in Guardiola’s starting XI.

But despite a very public pursuit of the Germany international, Bayern failed to make headway in their attempts to sign Sane and have since dropped their interest.
