The West Bromwich manager has moved into contention to replace the sacked Peter Taylor, after the club were told by Harry Redknapp at the weekend that he did not want to be considered.
Megson has worked wonders on a small budget at The Hawthorns and with Stockport County. Redknapp made his decision after being courted for weeks – the club denied they had made a concrete offer – fearing that there would be no cash to spend, even on loan players. The final straw came when Leicester were reluctant to pay the £500,000 compensation wanted by Portsmouth for their director of football.
The Old Firms' hopes of a move to the Premiership have received a setback after the game's world governing body Fifa said it would block any move. Rangers and Celtic had indicated that they would like to decamp southwards, but the Fifa vice-president David Will said that neither his organisation nor its European counterpart Uefa would permit the clubs to play in another country's league.
