Leicester City vs Burnley: Kightly cool as Burnley step up hunt for first win

Michael Kightly, who scored the goal to end Burnley’s club-record goal drought, has praised manager Sean Dyche for keeping the pressure off his goal-shy players.

Four minutes after the previous record set in 1970 had passed, Kightly poked home Lukas Jutkiewicz’s header, Burnley’s first goal in 10 hours and 55 minutes.

It equalised Jeff Schlupp’s opener and, even though Riyad Mahrez scored again inside a minute to put Leicester 2-1 up, Burnley’s increased belief enabled them to equalise six minutes into stoppage time through Ross Wallace’s free-kick.

“The gaffer’s brilliant, he just wants us to play with freedom but when you haven’t got a win and not scored many goals, it’s difficult,” Kightly said. “We haven’t got a win yet, but if we keep playing like that then I’m sure we will.”

Burnley now have two home games, against West Ham and Everton, when they hope to record their first win of the season, while Leicester will spend the international break kicking themselves for throwing away the win.

Defender Paul Konchesky denied the Foxes took their foot off the pedal. “After we beat Manchester United they expect you to beat Burnley,” he said. “We thought we had won it. It was a sloppy goal to concede but we have to take it on the chin.”
