Leeds United host Newcastle United on Wednesday night in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s team have been winning admirers for their approach since being promoted, but they have only won one of the last six and sit 14th in the table following a 2-1 home defeat to West Ham last time out. That was a match where the omnipresent threat of debatable VAR calls loomed large once more.

Leeds’ big problem at present is a relative lack of goalscoring potential; they have scored fewer than one per game on average across that recent six-game spell - by contrast, Newcastle have scored twice in each of their last two matches, earning back-to-back wins in the process.

The Magpies are up to 12th in the table as a result and have played one game fewer than most of the teams around them after their match against Aston Villa was postponed at the start of December.

Patrick Bamford and Callum Wilson have both been in great form this season as the main strikers for each side, netting eight and seven league goals respectively so far, which accounts for precisely half of Newcastle’s goals altogether this term and just shy of that, 47 per cent, of Leeds’ strikes coming from their No. 9.

Marcelo Bielsa was recently shortlisted for the FIFA Men’s Best coach of the year award following Leeds’ promotion, but the merit of that must now be proven with more regular top-flight victories.
