Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Reports had suggested the pair had travelled to London but that was immediately denied while the Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, who handles all transfer deals, was, in any case, on holiday in Spain.

Juventus are nevertheless certainly still interested in Vieira, who has two years left on his current deal. That would take him up to the age of 31 and Arsenal are understood to be set to offer him - as well as Gilberto Silva, Thierry Henry and Fredrik Ljungberg, new contracts. A new one-year deal has already been offered to Robert Pires, which has been rejected, and it is possible that the Frenchman will leave this summer. Pires, who has just 12 months left, could prove to be another target for Juventus, although he has also been linked to Valencia and Lyon, while the Turkish club Galatasaray have set a deadline of today for the 31-year-old to accept a three-year deal.

One player leaving Arsenal yesterday was the goalkeeper Graham Stack. The 23-year-old Irishman has moved to Reading on loan until January with a view to a permanent deal.

* The former England and Arsenal captain Tony Adams will join the Dutch club Feyenoord next season as a trainee coach.
