The Portuguese, who was sacked by Chelsea in December, is prepared to wait until the beginning of the close season to succeed Van Gaal at Old Trafford but, according to the Guardian, will pursue other options if made to wait any longer.
United fell to a humiliating first-leg defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League round-of-32 on Thursday evening with the Dutchman blaming “the law of Murphy” for their slump in fortunes this season.
Van Gaal’s men are six points adrift of the Premier League top four and face Shrewsbury in the fifth round of the FA Cup tonight.
Mourinho is believed by the Independent on Sunday to be ‘confident’ of taking over at United but is becoming increasingly frustrated by the resistance of Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, to sack the incumbent manager.
The 53-year-old was in Italy at the weekend meeting with members of the Inter Milan hierarchy but insists he is not interested in ousting Roberto Mancini at the San Siro.
Inter director Bedy Moratti accidentally revealed on Saturday night that Mourinho “is happy, he’s going to Manchester United”.
The sister of former club president Massimo Moratti and honorary president of the supporters’ group Inter Club spoke as she left a lunch meeting with the Portuguese and her family.
“Of course he’s always fantastic and we missed him as a person here,” she said. When she was asked if that meant he might return to Inter, she added: “No, he’s happy now, he’s going to Manchester.”
