The former Chelsea, Internazionale and Real Madrid coach, who was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May, arrived at Manchester Piccadilly train station late on Sunday night.
Mourinho announced his entrance via Instagram, posting a video of himself disembarking a train with the caption: "I am here/UNITED we can," plus a thumbs up emoji.
The 53-year-old and his goalkeeping coach Silvio Louro were then pictured outside Salford’s Lowry Hotel on Monday morning before making their way to Carrington, the club’s training ground.
Mourinho previously visited Carrington at the end of May, when was given a tour of the complex by United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
Despite Monday being his first official day of work, Mourinho has already completed two signings since his appointment was confirmed.
Eric Bailly, a young and highly-rated centre-back, joined from Villarreal last month and was followed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the former Milan, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain striker.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, is believed to be the next name on Mourinho’s hit list.
The Bundesliga side suggested that a deal had been completed on Saturday, confirming the sale of Mkhitaryan to “the fifth-place English team last season” on their official website.
United, however, are yet to agree personal terms with the 27-year-old Armenia international, who must also undergo a medical and obtain a work permit.
