Jose Mourinho's first match in charge of Manchester United will take place at the DW Stadium in a friendly next week.

The newly-promoted Championship side will host Mourinho and United on Saturday 16 July, kick-off at 1.30pm.

United last visited the DW Stadium in January 2013, Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie both scoring twice in a 4-0 victory for the away side.

The Red Devils have happy memories of the stadium, winning the Premier League at the venue in 2008, and losing just one of their eight visits.

“This will be Jose Mourinho’s first game and there will be a big focus on the DW Stadium,” Latics chairman David Sharpe said. “[This] will certainly give the supporters a great way to welcome our players back to the DW after the summer break and will be great occasions.”

Tickets for the all-ticket affair, which may or may not feature a certain Will Grigg, go on sale on Wednesday morning, priced at £15 for adults. No sales taking place on the day of the match.

Wigan host another Premier League side the following afternoon, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool providing the opposition.

Mourinho was appointed United manager at the end of May, replacing Louis van Gaal, and was unveiled on Tuesday.

He had been out of work since last December after being sacked from Chelsea following a poor start to their title defence.

United will also face Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Galatasaray in their pre-season preparations, before taking on Everton at Old Trafford in Wayne Rooney's testimonial on 3 August.

They will then face Leicester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on 7 August before their Premier League campaign starts at Bournemouth on 13 August.
