Jose Mourinho has revealed that he decided against signing superstars Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in the summer, because it "would have caused an explosion".

The Chelsea manager was offered the two stars by agent Jorge Mendes, who represents both players, but was put off by their massive wages - Falcao is reported to be making around £260,000-a-week at Manchester United.

"Jorge told me Di Maria and Falcao are his players and he has to find solutions for them," Mourinho is quoted as saying by The Sun, who carry extracts from the book The Key to Mendes.

"But if Chelsea doesn't have the financial capacity to pay eight, nine or ten million euros a year, because of [financial] fair play, of course Mendes has to think about his players.

"We couldn't bring Falcao or Di Maria because I didn't want to, either. I can't have a player earning 10 million when others earn three, four or five. That would have caused an explosion."

Mourinho was critical of Manchester City last week after they announced the signing of Wilfried Bony for £25million from Swansea. The Portuguese manager questioned whether the club would be within FFP after the signing.

"Well done, good player, good striker," he said. "If they have the money and can spend it and have no problems with Financial Fair Play, well done. The rules are different for City, you know what I mean. But they can only play with 11, unless the rules for them are different and they can play with 12.

"They have a fantastic squad, and one more top player for that squad: Aguero, Jovetic, Bony and Dzeko are fantastic. Well done."
