There was "palpable discord" between Jose Mourinho and his players, Chelsea's technical director has revealed.

The Portuguese manager was sacked on Thursday following a woeful defence of the Premier League title he led them to just seven months ago. Nine defeats in 16 Premier League games has left the club just a point above the relegation zone.

Speaking to Chelsea TV following yesterday's announcement, Michael Emenalo offered an insight into the club's decision to part ways with a manager they handed a new four-year contract to in August.

"Whilst there is huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter remains that Chelsea Football Club is in trouble," said the club's technical director.

"There obviously seems to be palpable discord between manager and players, and we feel it was time to act.

"The owner is forced to make what was a very tough decision for the good of the club.

"Anyone who loves the club, who has any kind of affiliation to the club, can understand that this club is in trouble, and something needed to be done."

Guus Hiddink, who had a previous short stint as manager at Stamford Bridge following the sacking of Luis Felipe Scolari, is expected to take charge until the end of the season.
