United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to field a young team for the trip to Hull City on Sunday, with a Champions League final clash with Barcelona in Rome just a few days later, and Evans is being lined up for a debut.
And today Corry received a double dose of good news when he was named in Nigel Worthington’s Northern Ireland squad to face world champions Italy, in Pisa, next month.
The 18-year-old Belfast lad has won rave reviews for his reserve displays in United’s defence and in midfield, and will replace his sibling on Sunday, with Ferguson taking no risks ahead of his bid to clinch the European Cup.
Ferguson is wary of any of his big names – and indeed their back-ups – picking up injuries and will put out a team on Sunday with only Gary Neville and Darren Fletcher as recognised stars.
It is a controversial move by Ferguson, with Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough all relying on Hull dropping points in the battle to stave off relegation from the Premier League.
Corry is a current Northern Ireland under 21 international and was among ten uncapped players named today by Worthington for the Italian friendly on June 6.
In a makeshift squad, only David Healy, Grant McCann and Damien Johnson are available from the regular panel and five local players — Crusaders’ Martin Donnelly and Colin Coates, Linfield's Robert Garrett and Alan Mannus, and Coleraine’s Stephen Carson — will make the trip to the city of the Leaning Tower.
Corry’s call-up will help fulfil a dream for the teenager, who said earlier this season: “Playing for the national side is everyone’s dream, really. It’s definitely a great ambition of mine to walk out for the senior team.”
