John Terry was shown a straight card against West Brom in a match where the focus was already on the Chelsea captain.
Jose Mourinho hauled his skipper off at half-time in Chelsea's previous match, a 3-0 loss to Manchester City, and there were doubts over whether the centre-back would start at the Hawthorns.
Mourinho stuck by his captain, with Gary Cahill making way for Kurt Zouma.
But the Special One may have regretted his decision when after 53 minutes Terry pulled back Solomon Rondon just outside the box with the West Brom player bearing down on goal. It led Mark Clattenburg to show him a straight red card.
Terry took his time leaving the pitch, spending time remonstrating with Clattenburg before finally heading to the tunnel.
But before reaching the edge of the pitch he stopped to remove his shin pads. The clearly angered Chelsea skipper ripped at the tape around his socks, which he then threw on the ground. He left the tape there.
As Terry walked to the tunnel, Mourinho did not acknowledge him.
It was Terry's first red card since April 2010 and his fifth overall.
