Talks between Joe Cole and Chelsea over a new contract have broken down, according to the England midfielder.

The 28-year-old's current deal expires in the summer at which point he could leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

However, Cole is keen to sign a new deal with the Blues.

"I've never spoken publicly about contracts before," he is quoted as saying in The Sun.

"I don't think contracts should really be discussed mid-season. I have always signed mine in the summer in the past.

"But this time it's different. We can't seem to find common ground and it's distracting. At the moment there is no offer on the table, so I know where I stand.

"I still hope to talk in the summer."

Cole has missed much of the season with a serious knee injury and has struggled to force his way into Carlo Ancelotti's team since returning.

The Italian coach recently said he was "100% certain" Cole would still be at the club next season.
