Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to hit out at Raheem Sterling’s agent for apparently leaking stories to try and hint at a move away from Liverpool in the future.

The former Liverpool defender has established himself as a well-rounded and respected football pundit since hanging up his boots in 2013. Having spent 23 years with the Merseyside club, Carragher unsurprisingly keeps a close eye on matters at his club, but what has been surprise is his criticism to the constant speculation regarding Sterling’s future.

But Carragher has blasted Sterling’s agent Robert Segal, and accused him of leaking stories to the press in an effort to either force a move away from the club or earn the 19-year-old a new contract.

Carragher wrote: “Message to Raheem Sterling agent, shut up feeding stories about his contract.”

Carragher’s outburst comes after reports emerged claiming the Reds faced a battle on their hands to convince the England international to extend his contract with Liverpool. Sterling is currently on £30,000-a-week at Anfield and has more than two years left to run, but the belief is that Liverpool are determined to lock him down to a long-term contract sooner rather than later.

The news comes after manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed talks are currently taking place with Daniel Sturridge regarding a new deal for the England striker, with a reported £150,000-a-week offer on the table.

The Reds are struggling without Sturridge in their line-up, although the 25-year-old could return from a thigh injury this weekend even though he was left out of the England squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia. That could prompt a change given that Mario Balotelli has not settled well at the club, having scored just once since completing his £16m summer transfer from AC Milan.
