Jack Wilshere could miss up to three months of the season after suffering a hairline fracture of his left fibula.

The Arsenal midfielder was ruled out of the Community Shield victory over Chelsea last Sunday but the initial prognosis was not serious, with Arsene Wenger suggesting the 23-year-old would only be out for 'days'.

However, the injury is much worse than feared.

Arsene Wenger said on arsenal.com: "I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out."

Wilshere could be out for three months if he requires surgery, or six-to-eight weeks if he does not. Wenger refused to specify exactly how long the midfielder would be missing.

The injury was picked up during training, with unconfirmed reports it was sustained in a tackle with defender Gabriel.

Wenger said: "There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage - there is no damage at all apart from that.

"It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental."

The England international has a history of injury problems, including missing six months of last season due to an ankle injury.
