The midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal, providing a welcome boost to the Welsh international as he recovers from a broken right leg.

The 19-year-old had made 29 appearances for the Gunners last season before suffering a double-fracture of his right tibia and fibula after a horrific tackle from Ryan Shawcross in the 3-1 win at Stoke in February prematurely ended his season.

"I'm very happy " he said. "It's a great club and I've learned a lot here. I still think I can develop my game with the support of the manager and a squad of very talented players."

Ramsey, who moved to the Emirates from Cardiff City in June 2008, will not be ready to return for the start of the season in August, but the club remain hopeful he will be back before the end of the year.
