Furthemore, Steve Bruce’s side have been something on a slump of late in the Premier League since their opening 1-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers, drawing three times and losing once to drop to tenth place after last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle United.
Meanwhile Manchester City hit Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday for seven at the Etihad Stadium after mauling the Owls 7-0 in the League Cup, with Frank Lampard and Edin Dzeko notching braces.
However, Manuel Pellegrini’s men have also suffered a downturn in form when it comes to the Premier League, with the Citizens failing to register a win in their last three games after winning their opening two fixtures against Newcastle United and Liverpool.

Manchester City thrashed Hull City 5-1 on Boxing Day at the Etihad Stadium to climb out of the bottom-three during the 2008-09 season.
Having picked up just 18 points from their opening 18 league games in the Premier League, first-half braces from Felipe Caicedo and Robinho had City in cruise control at the interval.
Craig Fagan pulled one back for the Tigers with ten minutes remaining, but Stephen Ireland fired in a fifth goal of the afternoon just moments later to restore the hosts four-goal cushion.
