Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Belarus international midfielder Aleksander Hleb has agreed to join Arsenal from the Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart on a long-term contract in a deal which could be worth up to £9.94m.

The Belarus international midfielder Aleksander Hleb has agreed to join Arsenal from the Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart on a long-term contract in a deal which could be worth up to £9.94m.

The player has still to pass a medical and obtain a work permit but Hleb said he was thrilled at the prospect of playing for the Gunners.

"I am very happy to have this fantastic opportunity to join Arsenal," he said. "They are a club with a great history and many world-class players."

The Gunners, however, are ready to resist any attempts by Juventus to lure Patrick Vieira to Italy as they continue moves to strengthen their squad before the start of the new season.

Vieira, who has been courted by Real Madrid over recent summers, has drawn the interest of Juventus, with the club's managing director, Luciano Moggi, having reportedly identified him as a potential transfer target.

"What we want is a midfield partner for Emerson, and our wish is to buy Vieira if Arsenal are willing to sell," Moggi said. Wenger made it clear at the weekend that he would not be selling Henry, Vieira or Pires, insisting that all three would be staying put this season.

The Arsenal goalkeeper Stuart Taylor has signed a four-year deal with Aston Villa after completing a medical yesterday. He will provide back-up for Thomas Sorensen.

The Arsenal forward Robin van Persie was released from custody in Holland yesterday after spending two weeks behind bars over rape allegations. A prosecution spokeswoman said he remained a suspect, but that it was no longer necessary to hold him for the purposes of the investigation.
