Harry Kane is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after Tottenham confirmed that the striker tore his left hamstring during the 1-0 defeat by Southampton.

No timescale has been given for Kane’s recovery, having limped off at St Mary’s just seconds after seeing his goal disallowed for offside late in the second half.

The club announced on Friday that “medical staff will continue to review the injury with treatment ongoing” after initial scans confirmed the tear.

Kane tweeted in response: “Head up. Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

Before the nature of Kane’s injury was revealed, manager Jose Mourinho raised his concerns that Tottenham were “going to lose him for some period”.

“But if you ask me just my feeling, good news or bad news, I am more bad news than good news, what the player felt, Harry Kane leaving a match the way he did,” Mourinho said in his press conference.

“He didn’t think twice, didn’t take him two seconds to realise the severity of the situation.”

Mourinho added that England captain Kane is “irreplaceable” but insisted he is “not thinking about the [transfer] market”.

He also admitted there was a possibility that Christian Eriksen, who continues to be linked to Manchester United, could be sold this month.
