From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is in contention to make a comeback from his groin injury this weekend against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old Brazil international has missed four games with the problem suffered against Hull last month but was fit enough to be a substitute on Saturday against Manchester United, a defeat that saw Carlo Cudicini concede from a free-kick into the corner of the net he was guarding.

It is thought that Gomes was not quite ready for a first-team return against United but he will have had another week of training before the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to face the Premier League leaders.

Jermaine Jenas also staked his claim for a place in the starting XI when he came on at half-time for his first appearance of the season following a calf problem.

Centre-back Sébastien Bassong is looking to bounce back from the defeat to United. The Cameroon international said: "We have to show a good reaction at Stamford Bridge, we have a good squad, a good spirit and that's what we intend to do."

The Chelsea match will be another test of Spurs' top-four credentials. Their midfielder Niko Kranjcar, after making his debut for the club at the weekend, said: "Everyone is talking about the top four but we'll take each game as it comes and hopefully we'll achieve that towards the end of the season. One game doesn't tell everything, we have to keep working hard."
